Weight Loss
Many people are striving to lose weight. In the modern world there are a growing number of people deemed to be overweight or obese, often being referred to as an ‘obesity epidemic’ in which many people could be doing a large amount of damage to their bodies. On both sides of the Atlantic it is feared that the life expectancy of many people will be drastically cut because of their weight. As a result there are some that think this causes an unnecessary burden on our country’s health system.
There are a variety of tips related to losing weight, but to put it simply it involves the balance between energy taken in by food and energy expelled by physical activity. When we eat our body stores energy in the form of calories, which is then used as the body exerts itself in some way. This can be through exercise or various other activities. If we exercise more of this energy than we take in, then we will lose weight. Likewise if we do not exercise or take part in physical actions enough then this energy is stored as fat.
All this talk of obesity can make many people think that they are overweight when in fact they are not. It is important to make sure that you need to lose weight before you begin as being underweight has its own issues. This is where Body Mass Index (BMI) comes into play. This calculates if you are the recommended weight based upon your height. If you are of the recommended weight then you do not need to lose any weight. Instead you should exercise to maintain this healthy weight, keeping the amount of exercise you do in balance with what you eat.
But weight loss is not just about exercise, it is also about healthy eating. This does not mean going on a crash course diet as this can cause its own problems and in the long run, people tend to put the weight back on eventually. Instead a balanced diet with carbohydrates, proteins, fruit and veg should be aimed for, with fat, sugar and salty foods kept to a minimum. What this means is that dieters should not cut fat out altogether as the body needs a certain amount of it. Instead you should try to stick to unsaturated fats.
Weight loss is all about sensible eating and sensible amount of exercise (around 30 minutes a day minimum), so as long as you keep you head on your shoulders weight loss can easily be attained.
